A group of 24 volunteers have gone on trial on the Greek island of Lesbos more than four years after they were arrested for carrying out migrant rescue missions off the coast of Greece. One of them, Sean Binder, worked for the now defunct Emergency Response Centre International charity 鈥 a search and rescue group operating from 2016 to 2018. The volunteers were initially detained in 2018 for several months on suspicion of human trafficking, but the charges facing them now involve espionage, illegal access to state communications, money laundering and assisting criminal activity. Mr Binder could face up to 25 years in prison if found guilty. He says he's feeling hopeful for the first time in five years and the best outcome is that the judge simply does her job fairly.
