China鈥檚 population has fallen for the first time in more than 60 years. The decline has roots in Beijing鈥檚 one-child policy imposed in 1980, which limited the number of children a couple could have to below 2.1, which is the average needed for a country鈥檚 population to remain stable. China鈥檚 government has for several years now been trying to encourage people to have more children. We heard from Jennifer Sciubba, a Fellow at the Wilson Center in Washington, DC, and author of 8 Billion and Counting, who told us why China's recent efforts to increase population haven't worked.
