New Zealand's Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, has announced she will resign next month, and will not stand in the general election on 14th October. According to opinion polls, Ms Ardern has seen her popularity wane due to concerns about the strictness of covid rules, rising inflation, and social inequality, but she was widely expected to pursue another term prior to her announcement. Jennifer Curtin, Professor of Politics and Public Policy at the University of Auckland, says her Labour party was "unified under her leadership which it wasn't prior to her government", and that the PM's compassion and kindness whilst still being able to be strong and competent stood out.
