Since seizing control of Afghanistan in August 2021, the Taliban authorities have moved to deny women and girls education and basic rights, and many people are battling food insecurity and a general economic collapse. Since then, more than 250,000 Afghans have fled to neighbouring Pakistan. But in recent weeks, the Pakistani authorities have begun deporting thousands of Afghans after a government amnesty expired. Newsday spoke to one young man who recently made that decision to return to Afghanistan after two months in Pakistan. 鈥淲e were in a bad financial situation in Pakistan. We had no support. Rent was very high... some people would make it double because we were immigrants.鈥 He started by explaining how his life changed when the Taliban arrived and his studies were cut short. We are not naming him for his own safety. (Pic: A boy looks back as he follows others crossing from Pakistan to Afghanistan. Credit: Reuters)
