North Korea: Pyongyang locks down over unspecified respiratory illness

Newshour

Available for over a year

Five months after North Korea declared "victory" over Covid-19 and a month after neighbouring China dropped its coronavirus restrictions, there are reports that a five-day lockdown has been ordered in Pyongyang because of an unnamed "respiratory illness". The secretive country has one of the worst healthcare systems in the world and it's not known whether its population of 25 million has been vaccinated. Newshour's James Cooramasamy has been speaking to Shreyas Reddy from South Korea based NK News.com. He says there's been panic buying in Pyongyang as people have been trying to pick up as many supplies as they can.
