How tracking what shoppers buy may help spot ovarian cancer

Newsday

Available for over a year

A new UK study has revealed that frequent purchases of over-the-counter of indigestion remedies and painkillers are a possible early warning alert for ovarian cancer - a disease often diagnosed late. Dr James Flanagan led the research, funded by Cancer Research UK, and told Newsday why he'd carried out the study. "The symptoms for ovarian cancer are generally considered quite vague and it's probably not surprising that people will treat them with over-the-counter medications before they start thinking this is persisting a little bit longer and perhaps I should go to see my GP [family doctor]."
