Ugandan woman sued for breaking off engagement

Focus on Africa

Available for over a year

A court in Uganda has ordered a woman to pay her former fiancé more than $2700 as compensation for breach of a promise to marry him. The fiancé, Richard Tumwine, said that he had paid for Fortunate Kyarikunda's law studies, on the agreement that they would get married once she has finished school. The court has ruled that since she broke this agreement by calling off their engagement, she must now repay the amount, with additional costs for damages and the psychological anguish she caused. Ugandan lawyer and journalist Agather Atuhaire told Focus on Africa's Priya Sippy that in common law in Uganda, a promise to marry is enforceable.
