A court in Uganda has ordered a woman to pay her former fiancé more than $2700 as compensation for breach of a promise to marry him. The fiancé, Richard Tumwine, said that he had paid for Fortunate Kyarikunda's law studies, on the agreement that they would get married once she has finished school. The court has ruled that since she broke this agreement by calling off their engagement, she must now repay the amount, with additional costs for damages and the psychological anguish she caused.
