Antony Blinken in Jerusalem 'to restore calm'

Newsday

Available for over a year

The US secretary of state Antony Blinken is in Jerusalem after weeks of worsening violence between Israelis and Palestinians. This month, 32 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank, and on Friday seven people were shot outside a synagogue in East Jerusalem. Mr Blinken said the immediate priority was to restore calm. Jacob Magid, the Times of Israel US correspondent, outlined what Mr Blinken may try and do and said that relations between the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and US President Joe Biden are "pretty warm, they have a 40-year relationship... but there are certain red lines that the US is willing to maybe push back on."
