Newsday

Available for over a year

More than 80 people are known to have been killed in a suicide bomb attack at a mosque in the Pakistani city of Peshawar. Emergency teams who worked through the night recovered more bodies from the rubble in the wake of the bombing on Monday. Many of those who died were policemen praying inside the mosque in what is supposed to be a secure part of the city. The Pakistani prime minister, Shehbaz Sharif, said terrorism was now Pakistan's foremost national security challenge. Security has been stepped up in the capital, Islamabad. No group has admitted carrying out the attack. Ashraf Ali is the national general secretary of the organisation The Blood Heroes, which has volunteer blood donors in Peshawar. Speaking to Newsday, he said everyone there was too scared to go out, and in shock. He said that thousands of people had so far donated blood to be given to the hospitals where the injured are being treated.
