Afghan activist: UN shouldn't negotiate with Taliban

Newsday

Available for over a year

The UN representative for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief, Martin Griffiths, has said that some Taliban members are optimistic about re-opening schools for girls. Mr Griffiths emphasised that putting pressure on the Taliban is not the only solution, but said encouraging them to take care of 28 million Afghans can make them re-consider their decisions. But some Afghans are not happy with UN officials meeting the Taliban. Mina Rafiq, an Afghan women rights activist, said women should be there when discussions are had about them. She says: "The Taliban are a terrorist group... they will never let the people of Afghanistan and especially the women, be free."
