Why is Pope Francis in DR Congo?

Newsday

Available for over a year

Pope Francis has celebrated one of his biggest masses, in DR Congo's capital, Kinshasa. It is more than 37 years since a pope visited the mineral-rich but conflict-ridden country. The Catholic Church plays a crucial role in the country supporting education and healthcare and half of the country's 90 million people are Catholics. Christopher Lamb, the Rome correspondent of The Tablet has been travelling with Pope Francis and outlined the importance of the trip. He explains that Africa is where the growth of Catholicism is taking place and is "the future of the church". Pope Francis is bringing a message of peace to the war torn country and is to meet displaced survivors of the conflict from the east of the country.
