What's behind Nigeria's fuel shortages?

Newsday

Available for over a year

In Nigeria 鈥 one of Africa鈥檚 largest crude oil producers, a fuel distribution crisis is playing out, weeks away from a national election. With almost no refining capacity Nigeria must import fuel from elsewhere. Empty pumps have left people queuing at petrol stations to fill cars and generators and the cost of fuel on the black market reportedly doubling. How will this feed into the election campaign? Kayode Akindele, a partner at an investment management firm, TIA Capital, in Lagos told Newsday who is paying the price of the fuel supply shortage. 鈥淧etrol stations don鈥檛 want to sell because they think the fuel subsidies are about to end. If you want to buy at the official rate you probably have to queue for a pretty long time. If you want to buy at the increased rates which are not official you can get petrol pretty quickly.鈥 (Pic: People wait to fill their plastic containers outside a fuel station along a road in the Yaba district of Lagos, Nigeria; Credit: EPA)
