Turkey earthquake: Rescuers running out of time and supplies

Newsday

Available for over a year

Supplies are desperately needed to help find and care for survivors of the earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria on Monday 6 February. Over 11,000 people are now known to have died with the death toll expected to rise further. The search for survivors continues in freezing conditions. While aid efforts from countries and organisations around the world are being stepped up, many locals are rescuing people and coordinating supplies themselves. Normally a farmer and restaurant owner, Bedia Gucum is a volunteer in the town of Adana, on the outskirts of the quake zone in southern Turkey. She reports transport is slow and many people are in desperate need of tents, blankets and gloves to dig through the rubble of collapsed buildings. "The first 48 hours are crucial," she says.
