Turkey-Syria earthquake: Criticism of Erdogan's response grows

Newshour

Available for over a year

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is facing growing criticism at his government's response to Monday's devastating earthquake. Critics says the relief effort has been too slow and the government was poorly prepared. But as Mr Erdogan spent a second day visiting the earthquake zone, he defended his government's response, saying it was impossible to prepare for the scale of the disaster. At one site particularly badly hit, he prayed with survivors, in a tent. But his irritation with mounting criticism of the way his government is responding was evident, according to journalist Amberin Zaman from the Al-Monitor news website. She's been speaking to Newshour's Paul Henley. Picture: President Tayyip Erdogan meets with people in the aftermath of a deadly earthquake in Kahramanmaras Credit: PPO/Reuters
