A crisis in Northern Ireland's mental health provision, says the region's Mental Health Champion

Good Morning Ulster

Available for over a year

Northern Ireland's Mental Health Champion, Professor Siobh谩n O'Neill, tells Good Morning Ulster that health providers are struggling to meet the demand in the number of people who are in immediate distress. Professor O' Neill advised that there had been a rise in the number of people accessing support privately. Recent Department of Health figures revealed that the number of people waiting to access psychological therapies in the region has increased for the fourth year in a row to more than 6,700. This issue forms part of a broader nationwide trend in the delay for mental health provision. Ms. O'Neill stated that mental health waiting lists are "worrying" and the region-wide mental health strategy 2021-2031 necessitated advancement "within the next ten years."
