Dozens of Kenyans have expressed their support for Senator Gloria Orwoba after the politician was asked to leave Kenya's upper house on Tuesday because of an apparent blood stain on her white trousers. She said she had noticed the stain before entering the building. "Since I am always advocating against period shame, I thought I should go ahead and walk the talk," she said. The senator is behind a motion pushing for an increase in government funding for free sanitary pads and provision of female hygiene products in all public schools. But some MPs, including another female senator, have criticised her. Senator Tabitha Mutinda said, "You don't understand if she's on the normal woman cycle or she's faking it, and it is so indecent." She added that this was not setting a good example to young women and girls. Speaking to Newsday, Linet Aguma, director of Jali Sisters in Nairobi, an organisation that assists vulnerable girls and young women in Kenya, says that she supports Senator Orwoba because "that is actually what girls and many women are going through."
