Episode details

Available for over a year
A man known as "the Dusseldorf patient" has become the third person declared cured of HIV after receiving a stem cell transplant that also treated his leukaemia. The treatment involved using a genetically compatible bone marrow donor who had a specific and rare CCR5 mutation that occurs in just one percent of the population. The recoveries of two other people with HIV and cancer following the same high-risk procedure were announced at different scientific conferences last year, though research has yet to be published on those cases. Asier Saez-Cirion of France's Pasteur Institute told Newsday that the Dusseldorf patient is in "good health, happy and feeling very fortunate".
