Cheluchi Onyemelukwe: ‘Some days the grief is completely overwhelming’

Newsday

Available for over a year

This Friday marks one year since the killing of Nigerian economist Professor (Chief) Obidinma Isaiah Okoli Onyemelukwe, father of the novelist Cheluchi Onyemelukwe. He had been travelling in Nigeria with his wife Dr Rebecca Onyemelukwe when their car was hijacked by a local armed gang. His wife survived the attack, but he was shot and killed. Their daughter Cheluchi, winner of the Nigeria Prize for Literature for her book The Son of the House, spoke to Newsday about her grief one year on and the security situation in Nigeria. "You don't have a country if you don't have security. It's combustible: it feels like you're just waiting for that match strike. What is it that is going to make this nation burst?"
