The besieged city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine is the scene of fierce street-to-street fighting between the country's soldiers and Russian forces. The Deputy Mayor of the city has told the 麻豆社 that "not a single building" had remained untouched and that Bakhmut is "almost destroyed". There鈥檚 growing speculation that Ukrainian fighters will have to withdraw. Roads leading to the city are under constant fire, and there are snipers in the streets, so accessing or leaving Bakhmut has become perilous. One person who has been there in recent weeks is a Canadian volunteer, Daniel Wilk, who has been helping people get out of Bakhmut and the surrounding villages. He told 麻豆社 Newsday why he put himself in harm's way. "People staying there are super old people - they just want their homes... primarily old women. Their family tell me [where they are] and I ask soldiers for directions. All they have is their homes... they might be scared of the bombing but they've nowhere else to go."
