Afghan women's library forced to close months after opening

Newshour

Available for over a year

A women-only library in the Afghan capital, Kabul, has been forced to close following restrictions imposed by the Taliban. It opened seven months ago as an oasis for women and girls who have been increasingly cut off from education and public life. Newshour's Neggeen Sadid has been speaking to Laila Basim, who founded the library. "Over the past two months it's been impossible to keep the library open," she says. "Every single day library workers have been threatened." (Photo shows: An Afghan woman attends the inauguration of women's library in Kabul, Afghanistan, August 24, 2022. Credit: Reuters)
