What will the UN's new climate report tells us and why does it matter?

Newsday

Available for over a year

The world is awaiting a new climate change report which is expected to form the basis of future government policies around the world. The Synthesis Report from the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is a summary document from the last six years of scientific research on global warming and how it can be tackled. Hundreds of scientists around the world have been gathering evidence for the report, which will also take into account the changing weather patterns which have created floods, droughts and unusually severe storm events, like the one which hit east Africa in the last four weeks. Ellie Cohen is the CEO of The Climate Center, a climate solutions think tank based in California. She told Newsday what we can expect: "This report will once again summarise in dire terms what world leaders have known for a long time. The climate crisis is here, it's deadly and it's driven by fossil fuels... The good news is that we have the solutions. We know exactly what we need to do, and we have the technology, we have the know-how, we just need to apply it at scale all over the world."
