Senegal tech group files complaint against TikTok

Focus on Africa

Available for over a year

In Senegal, a group of organisations in the communication technology sector, under the umbrella name Restic, has filed a complaint against the Chinese social media platform TikTok. The app is one of the fastest growing in Africa, and particularly in Senegal. Restic's executive director, Moustapha Diakhaté, says children can spend hours interacting with the app, and can be exposed to dangerous and violence content. There is also concern about how data is stored and used. He says Restic has lodged their complaint with the Seneglese body that protect the rights of internet users and wants to see more stringent control over the social network, their use of personal data, and tighter regulations over how people access it.
