A Kenyan firm that transforms hard-to-recycle plastic waste into low-carbon and sustainable building materials has been named Startup of the Year in a global competition which spans 120 countries. Kubik collects discarded plastic which is then used to create durable bricks, columns and beams. Chief executive officer and co-founder, Kidus Asfaw, says the first project is in Ethiopia and the long-term aim is to provide a continent-wide solution to the problems of environmental pollution and expensive, unaffordable housing. He tells Focus on Africa's Audrey Brown, the Global Start-up Award is "great recognition" of their work. (Photo: Kidus Asfaw, founder of Kubik. Credit: Kubik, Inc.)
