‘China wants to cut Taiwan off from the world’

Newsday

Available for over a year

China says its military drills around Taiwan, now into a third day, are simulating sealing off the island. The display of force is Beijing's angry reponse to a visit by the Taiwanese president to the US. Tingting Liu is a foreign affairs and defence reporter in Taiwan. She told Newsday: “In the past 52 hours, there’s a total of 200 People’s Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft…11 PLA navy vessels…four J-15 PLA fighter jets…The PLA is actually practising how to cut off Taiwan from the rest of the world. (Picture: Customers at a restaurant in Beijing dine near a giant screen broadcasting news footage of the People’s Liberation Army taking part in military exercises around Taiwan.
