Khartoum: Reports of looting and sexual violence

Newsday

Available for over a year

The United States has made a further attempt to bring an end to the fighting in Sudan. The Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke on the phone to the leaders of the warring factions and called for a ceasefire. State department officials said he expressed grave concern about civilian deaths in separate calls with the heads of the armed forces and the rival paramilitary Rapid Support Force (RSF). Hala al-Karib is a Sudanese activist for women's rights in Khartoum. She told Newsday that she was “hearing news from friends and colleagues in different parts of Khartoum speaking about RSF soldiers and other types of soldiers…trying to break in to homes to loot…and there are unconfirmed reports of sexual violence…There is nowhere to go…there is no safe routes…no instructions from the military…no hotlines. (Picture: Shows satellite imagery of burning buildings near Khartoum International Airport in Sudan.
