Newsday

Available for over a year

A rare solar eclipse has thrilled thousands of people who flocked to a remote Australian town for the best vantage point on Earth to watch it. The sky over Exmouth in Western Australia turned dark for about 60 seconds on Thursday, when the Moon cast a 40km-wide shadow over the area. The head of the town鈥檚 government is Darlene Allston. She told Newsday that the town鈥檚 population went from 3,000 people to an estimated 20,000: 鈥淲e put in an extra 1,000 campsites鈥ust so that we could accommodate people.鈥 (Picture: Shows people watching a total solar eclipse at a viewing site near Exmouth, Western Australia.
