Haiti suspected gang members burned to death by mob

Newsday

Available for over a year

Thirteen suspected gang members have been beaten and burned to death by a mob in Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince. The Caribbean nation has descended towards lawlessness following the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021, with criminal gangs taking control of large areas. The suspects were reportedly beaten with gasoline-soaked tyres before being set alight in Port-au-Prince on Monday. Police say they confiscated weapons from them just before the incident. They have not explained how members of the public got hold of the suspects. Newsday spoke to freelance journalist in the capital, Harold Isaac. "The population feels hopeless... the situation in the country has led people to want to take the matter into their own hands... it's a very fragile situation right now in Haiti," he said.
