Why indigenous leaders are seeking an apology from King Charles

Newshour

Available for over a year

Indigenous leaders from 12 Commonwealth countries have signed a letter asking King Charles III for a formal apology for the effects of British colonisation. The letter, titled 鈥渁pology, reparation, and repatriation of artefacts and remains鈥, has been signed by representatives of Antigua and Barbuda, Aotearoa (New Zealand), Australia, the Bahamas, Belize, Canada, Grenada, Jamaica, Papua New Guinea, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. They're also asking the King to begin a process that would lead to the return of human remains and cultural artefacts which were taken during that time. Lidia Thorpe, an independent senator in Australia and one of the signatories, shares her thoughts. (Image: Lidia Thorpe, Credit: Fairfax Media)
