President Erdogan extends rule in Turkey

Newsday

Available for over a year

President Erdogan has extended his rule for another five years with victory in Turkey's election. He saw off opposition leader, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, in the second round run-off election as neither candidate had secured an outright majority in the first round two weeks ago. Mr Erdogan promised his jubilant supporters in Ankara, to build a strong economy and called for unity. Mehmet Mehdi Eker, an MP for the ruling AKP, said the election had shown how a "vibrant democracy" works and that President Erdogan's narrative is "to bring people together again for a bright and brilliant future".
