Translating Animal Farm into Shona

Newshour

Available for over a year

George Orwell's short novel Animal Farm tells the story of livestock rising up against their human owner to create a new and equal society. When it was published in 1945, the book was seen as a satire of the Soviet Union. But a group of writers in Zimbabwe believe the book continues to resonate with their country鈥檚 politics, so much so that they鈥檝e translated it into the national language, Shona. Author and translator Petina Gappah led the project, and she explains to Julian Worricker why the Shona title for the book isn鈥檛 Animal Farm, but Animal Revolution.
