Namibia is the last country in the Southern Hemisphere where seal harvesting is still practised. Its annual cull begins on 1 July and runs for a month. But after many European countries have banned the import of seal furs, the main export product that remains is the bulls' genitals, which are used in traditional Chinese medicine. So as international demand for seal products drops, is this practise still necessary? Could the revenue be replaced by more seal-watching tourists? Newsday speaks to conservationist Naude Dryer as he heads to the Namibian coast. (Image: Cape fur seals in Namibia, Credit: VW Pics/Getty Images)
