France riots: Macron鈥檚 plan to rebuild 'really disappointing'

Newsday

Available for over a year

President Emmanuel Macron has announced a bill to help France rebuild after the country's worst rioting for two decades. Riots spread across the country last week following the fatal shooting by police of a 17-year-old called Nahel. He was fatally shot in the chest, at the wheel of a Mercedes car for driving off during a police traffic check. At 17 he was too young for a licence. The draft legislation aims to speed up the process of repairs to roads, buildings, street furniture and public transport. Mr Macron made the announcement during talks with more than 200 mayors he had invited to the presidential palace. Among those attending was Zartoshte Bakhtiari, who is the mayor of Neuilly-sur-Marne in the east of Paris. He told Newsday he was disappointed by the measures announced by the president: 鈥淚 was waiting for more toughness against those people who are responsible for the riots鈥e have people aged between 12 and 16...who are responsible for the major part of these acts and today they don鈥檛 fear justice.鈥 (Picture: Shows a pedestrian walking past a damaged store facade with a message reading "Justice for Nahel" in the centre of Marseille, southern France on July 1, 2023.
