At least 44 people have been killed in an explosion in Pakistan during a rally organised by an Islamist party. More than 100 people were also injured in the explosion in north-west Bajaur Khar, where Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) was holding a meeting. A rescue operation has been completed and all injured have been taken to hospital. Shandana Gulzar Khan, a member of parliament in the country told Newsday 'this is about the twelfth attack in the province and the first attack at a political rally, usually its attacks on military convoys and police officers.' She thinks it's a targeted campaign by extremists and 'the ideology seems to be attacking officers of the state whose job it is to protect our lives. In any other country she says this would be seen as a colossal intelligence failure' to have bomb blasts one after the other.' It comes ahead of elections in Pakistan and she says 'it sends a chilling message to anyone who wants a democracy in Pakistan'.
