The authorities on the Hawaiian island of Maui say it will take many years and billions of dollars to repair the damage caused by devastating wildfires. At least 53 people have been killed and some 1,000 are not yet accounted for. Officials say downed communication lines are making it difficult to locate people. The governor of Hawaii, Josh Green, said 80% of the town of Lahaina on the west side of the island had been destroyed. Alice Lee is the Chair of Maui County Council. She told Newsday that 鈥渁lmost 280 businesses鈥 in Lahaina had been lost: 鈥淎ll the shops and little restaurants that people visited on their trips to Maui, most of them have burned down to the ground鈥 This is probably the worst disaster that Maui has ever experienced.鈥 (Picture: Shows destroyed homes and businesses burned to the ground in Lahaina in the aftermath of wildfires in western Maui, Hawaii.
