Hawaii wildfires: The 'charred remains' of buildings in Lahaina

Newsday

Available for over a year

The US state of Hawaii is bracing itself for a significant rise in casualties following deadly wildfires in which 93 people are known to have died so far. The island鈥檚 governor, Josh Green, has warned that the figure would continue to rise as search and rescue operations continue, with hundreds of people remaining unaccounted for. Jason DeRose is a correspondent for National Public Radio news. He tells Newsday that the fires have all but destroyed the historic town of Lahaina. He tells us what he witnessed from the deck of a tourist boat that was delivering much needed supplies to the town. Photo shows: An aerial view of the wildfire aftermath in Lahaina on Maui, Hawaii.
