If approved in a vote on 14 October, it would recognise indigenous people in the country's constitution and establish a body for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to give advice on laws to Australia's parliament. The proposal is the subject of fierce debate and the country has not had a successful referendum in almost 50 years. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the vote "a once-in-a-generation chance to bring our country together and to change it for the better". Hannah McGlade, an Indigenous lawyer, spoke to Newshour about why she sees a body for Aboriginal people to give advice on laws to Parliament as important for righting historic and contemporary discrimination.
