South African blogger stuck in Gabon during coup

Newsday

Available for over a year

Popi Sibiya is a South African blogger who was on a tour of the continent when she got stuck in Gabon during the coup. The military takeover was announced shortly after President Ali Bongo had been declared the winner of a disputed election. At the weekend the military reopened the country’s borders but rather than leave, the local travel content creator decided to stay a few more days. She told Newsday that locals she met “weren’t expecting a coup…they were in shock…I’m about to leave now…I don’t scare easily…I’m moving on to Cameroon. I’m going forward.” (Picture: Shows Popi Sibiya. Credit: Popi Sibiya.)
