2030 World Cup: 'Pride, excitement and relief' in Morocco

Newsday

Available for over a year

The World Cup is heading back to Africa for the first time since 2010, via Europe and South America. Morocco will co-host the 2030 competition alongside Spain and Morocco, with three south American countries hosting three opening games to mark the centenary of the competition - which began in Montevideo in Uruguay. Tom Yousef Drissi, a writer who is in Fez in Morocco, told Newsday that there was ''pride and excitement'' in the country after the announcement. Morocco has bid to host the tournament six times, so he says there's a "slight element of relief" as well. Although there is no official announcement yet, he thinks Morocco will probably host about 25 matches in about five cities, and some of these places already have work under way on stadiums.
