The heads of UN agencies involved with humanitarian relief told the General Assembly on Friday that the situation in Gaza had become an intolerable humanitarian crisis, and they blamed both Israel and Hamas for violating international laws governing conflict. The conflict started on October the 7th when Hamas - deemed a terrorist organisation by many Western governments, including the United States - launched an unprecedented assault on Israel from the Gaza Strip killing about 1,200 people and taking more than 200 hostages. Israel responded with air strikes on Gaza and has launched a ground offensive. More than 12,000 people have been killed, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. 5,000 of those are children, and among the dead are 14 nephews and nieces of the Palestinian journalist Ahmed Alnaouq - who lives here in the UK.
