The introduction of the National Security Law in Hong Kong by the Chinese government in June 2020 raised concerns about erosion of freedoms and civil liberties. Many Hong Kong residents, especially those who had been involved in pro-democracy activities, felt their rights were increasingly at risk; some residents wanted to look for more stable environments for their families. Britain's historical connection to Hong Kong, meant that many Hong Kong residents had ties to the UK when the British government created a path to citizenship for British national overseas or BNO passport holders; this encouraged more people to arrive in the UK and as a result the Methodist church has flourished Gilly Hope popped along to the Brunswick Church in Newcastle to meet Rev Paul Cleever Thrope and church goers Jacqueline and TC.
