How is the date of Eid decided?

Available for over a year

As the holy month of Ramadan comes to an end, millions of Muslims around the world are preparing for the festival of Eid al-Fitr. It starts after a new Moon is sighted and this year it is expected to be on Wednesday 10 April. But the end of the Islamic month of Ramadan is decided by the lunar calendar and it can be a difficult task - as it's not always easy to see the new moon in this country. Riyaz Bhikha from Leicester's Crescent Society told Ady Dayman why it is that we only find out when Eid is celebrated with a few hours notice.
