Remembering Bristol's Bus Boycott

Available for over a year

How a small group in Bristol changed our city and exposed racism over 60 years ago. Paul Stephenson, Guy Bailey and Roy Hackett were part of the group that masterminded Britain’s first black-led campaign against racial discrimination. Using Â鶹Éç Bristol archives this is their story and how with the help of MP Tony Benn they changed our country. Just a quick warning: as some of this audio is from our archives, it contains some language and racial references used at the time that you may find offensive. We’ve used it to illustrate the attitudes faced by many Black people in British society back in the Sixties, as we feel it helps highlight the scale of the problem the boycott was trying to tackle.
