Mangrove Forests due to decline by 50%

Newsday

Available for over a year

Mangroves work like sponges, providing efficient protection from storm surges, flooding and winds, by soaking up much of the energy in the water generated by these natural events. However, the world's mangrove ecosystem is under threat. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) concludes in a new study that half of mangroves are at risk of collapse by 2050. This decline could be reversed by increasing efforts to conserve existing mangroves, and replanting them in areas where they have been lost. Dr. Lola Fatoyinbo, Research Scientist at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, tells us more. Image Credit: Getty Images.
