Nigerian President brings back the old national anthem

Newshour

Available for over a year

Now to a new controversy in Nigeria. Not over soaring inflation, declining living standards or rampant insecurity in the north. It’s because President Bola Tinubu has marked his first year in office by officially changing the national anthem back to the one from 1960, when Britain withdrew, and Nigeria became independent. It seems a lot of Nigerians are wondering: why bother? MacDonald Ekemezie is a writer and theatre and documentary producer who comments on cultural and political issues in Nigeria. He told Newshour he believes the old anthem emboldens Nigerian society. (Picture: Nigerian President Bola Tinubu; credit - Reuters)
