Abuse is common for many former MPs and prospective parliamentarians. In February, the government announced a budget of £31m to cover the costs of security for politicians. Panic alarms are just one item in a growing range of security measures now available to MPs – and for the 2024 election, they are available to all 4,379 candidates. Our deputy political editor Vicki Young has been looking into abuse and safety in politics, and in this piece we hear from Suella Braverman, Naz Shah, Tobias Ellwood and Jo Stevens about the threats they have received.
