How Hull saved children from the Spanish civil war
Hidden East YorkshireAvailable for over a year
The town of Guernica was fire bombed at the start of the Spanish civil war. Families rushed to evacuate their children. Hundreds made the passage to England and a handful ended up in a house in Hull's Pearson Park. A blue plaque commemorates their story and the efforts of the people of Hull to aid them. Sally Fairfax reports. Pictured: Nearly 4,000 Basque refugee children left for Southampton on the Habana, a ship designed to carry 800 passengers. (Credit: Getty)
