Newshour

Available for over a year

Thousands of doctors have gone on strike across India to demand better protection for health workers after a trainee medic was raped and murdered in Kolkata, in the east of the country. The resident doctor鈥檚 body was found last Friday with multiple injuries and signs of sexual assault in a seminar hall at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, according to local police. One suspect has been arrested. These doctors wanted strong action and lamented their working conditions: According to Dr Vinay Aggarwal, Chairman of the Action Committee of the Indian Medical Association, the organisation is demanding duty rooms, proper security and for hospitals to be declared "safe zones".
