Would you swim in the Cam?

Available for over a year

Anglian Water will launch a study next year to find out what's spoiling the water at an official river swimming spot in Cambridge. The Cam at Sheep's Green was recently rated 'poor' for water quality, the worst possible rating. The site was given official bathing status earlier in 2024. Anglian Water say: "We share our customers’ desire to make our waterways healthier, and we know how valuable they have become for community recreation and wellbeing. We’re committed to playing our part in making that happen. As part of our Get River Positive programme we’ve pledged to make sure our operations will not be the reason for poor river health." Water UK, which represents the water industry, said: "The quality of English bathing water had improved since the 1990s but that the water companies agreed that more needed to be done to reduce sewage discharges.
