A cull of birds will be carried out around Fownhope, following confirmation of the disease in the area. It comes after enhanced safety measures were enacted due to a rise in cases. The order requires poultry and captive birds to be kept indoors to prevent the spread of the disease. Similar housing orders were also introduced in Worcestershire, Cheshire, Merseyside and Lancashire on 16 February. Dr Christine Middlemiss is the UK's Chief Veterinary Officer and tells Andrew Easton why the cull is being introduced, and the point at which restrictions can be lifted.
