In May 2000 London's first directly elected mayor Ken Livingstone, entered office.  Since then, the Mayors of London have overseen transport, the fire service and policing in the capital. They also have powers over strategic planning, home building and the environment. And they’ve done that all under the watchful eyes of members of the London Assembly which scrutinises the Mayor.
